NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has appointed a five-member panel to suggest preservation and security of the treasure unearthed at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Templeof Kerala.

The committee will be headed by director general of National Museum and will consist of representatives from the Archaeological Surey of India and the Reserve Bank of India.

The apex court has asked media not to speculate on the worth of assets of the temple before its valuation is done.

The court did not say anything on the opening of the unopened B vault.

The court had earlier reserved its order on the question of permitting inventory, videography and providing fool proof security to the temple treasure.

Petitioner in Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple case dies:
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: TP Sunderarajan, who approached the apex court requesting a stock taking of the gold and jewels stored in theSree Padmanabhaswamy temple near here, passed away early Sunday. He was 70.

He was suffering from fever for the past two days and was at his home near the temple when he died, a source close to him said.

His funeral will take place later in the day, he added.

A seven member committee formed by the apex court has completed the stock taking of five of the six vaults of the temple early this month. The treasure is unofficially estimated to be worth over Rs.one lakh crores.

Sunderarajan, a 1964 batch Indian Police Service officer, had approached the apex court citing that the temple affairs were being mismanaged. He wanted an estimation of the assets that remained untouched for several years.

He was part of the security ring of the former prime minister Indira Gandhi. He later quit his job and took up the legal profession.

Five-tier security system for Padmanabhaswamy temple:
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala government has given approval to a five-tier security system for the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple which has crores of rupees of valuables locked up in its vaults.

The modern security system, approved by a high-level meeting of officials and experts called by chief minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday, takes into account all possible dangers to the shrine including theft, sabotage and natural disasters, official sources said.

The committee comprises experts from ISRO, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the Centre for Earth Sciences Studies and top officials of Kerala police.

The system, which will have such advanced components like satellite surveillance and seismographic-linked alarm system, is expected to cost Rs 41 crore, they said.

It would also have metal detectors, X-ray scanners and hidden cameras at various points of the temple complex spread around seven acres in the heart of Kerala's capital.

Installation of sophisticated locks and alarms at the vaults are also under consideration. An infrared beam-based intruder detection system, linked to a security camera network, has also been proposed, the sources said.

Select doors, windows and ventilators of the temple known for its structural grandeur would be fortified with steel bars and impact resistant glass.

The plan suggested safe-keeping of the invaluable articles ranging from stone-studded crowns and idols to piles of gold and silver coins in tamper-proof steel safe-deposit boxes.

The temple has six vaults, most of them underground, filled with priceless articles. During the recent inventory by a Supreme Court-appointed panel, five of these vaults were opened, leaving out one chamber, called "vault B".

The inventory was followed by formation of another experts' panel for scientific evaluation of the treasures headed by National Museum director C V Aananda Bose.

Government has already stepped up security of the temple after discovery of the treasures by deploying police personnel and commandos.

Vault B of Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple not to be opened now:
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday said the vault 'B' of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple will be opened only after substantial work regarding documentation and preservation of assets unearthed from other 'kalaras' (vaults) of the shrine is completed.

A bench headed by justice R V Raveendran turned down the plea of an expert committee to hand over the security of the temple to Central paramilitary forces and directed the state government to provide foolproof cover to the temple to protect its assets which are estimated to be over Rs 1.50 lakh crore.

The bench also said that the management of the temple would provide an amount of Rs 25 lakh per year for preservation of assets and security of the temple and the rest of the amount needed would be borne by the state government.

The court said that no tender should be floated for private players for giving contract for preservation work of the assets and said that it has to be done by Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited ( KELTRON).

The court said it will take up the matter again after three months.

The apex court had on September 16 reserved its orders for security of the temple and opening ofvault B. It had said that tradition and customs would be protected as far as possible in providing security to the Temple.

The court had on July 21 appointed a five-member expert committee to supervise the unearthing and preservation of assets of the Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

The committee is headed by director general of National Museum C V Ananda Bose and comprises representatives of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Reserve Bank of India ( RBI).

The court had also appointed a three-member committee to oversee the work of unearthing of the temple's assets.

The overseeing committee comprises retired judge of Kerala High Court, justice M N Krishnan, the erstwhile Prince of Travancore Marthanda Varma and a government representative of the rank of secretary.

The apex court passed the orders on an application filed by Marthanda Varma and his family members challenging a Kerala High Court ruling of January 31 this year, ordering a takeover of the assets and management of the shrine by the state.

The bench had earlier expressed apprehension that the massive wealth was perhaps at a "risk" in view of the widespread publicity given to it in the media.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered integrated multi-level security for the wealth unearthed in Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Kerala.

The apex court said that the temple treasures will be digitally recorded with technical help from Keltron and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. This will include preparing 3D images of precious items.

According to reports the court also ordered not to open the sixth vault till security is in place.
